The language of mathematics provides precision, uniformity and a rigorous elegance with which we can communicate complex ideas. At JCS, our effort is to make our students literate in the core mathematical principles so that they can function effectively as citizens, in the workplace, or as students pursuing additional study.
Benchmarks at JCS are aligned with state and federal standards. For younger students and those with less mathematical background, we supplement with activities to develop understanding of numbers, variables, introductory geometry, and other pre-algebra topics.
The Upper School students at JCS follow a sequence from Algebra through Calculus. Three years of high school mathematics are required for graduation, but four years are strongly encouraged and followed by the majority of students.
Our approach to mathematics provides an opportunity to understand and apply mathematical ideas in real word contexts as well as puzzles that may simply entertain but have far reaching effects. The curriculum emphasizes modeling and creative problem solving: true mathematical skills.
Students are placed in math classes depending upon their ability and mathematical skill level.
