Upper School Program (9th-12th)
Our Upper School program provides rich and rigorous academic offerings, offered in yearly rotations. Classes are taught by subject matter specialists, most often by someone with a Master’s degree in the field. Some courses are taught in Seminar settings; others are taught in classes that meet 4 or 5 days a week. Classes tend to have a mix of high school ages, and range in size between 4 and 12 students in a class. Some classes are specifically designed for upper classmen; others are not.
All students have an offering in every academic core subject every year:
- Social Studies
- Inquiry-based Science
- World Language
- Physical Education
Four years in JCS’s Upper School program provide a full complement of rigorous high school level classes and these course offerings more than prepare our students to meet graduation requirements at JCS – or in any other high school school setting. [While we believe that a student gets the best education by taking full advantage of all 4 years of JCS’s well-designed Upper School program, our courses do transfer easily to other schools, if necessary, and other school coursework transfers in.]
A student in the senior year has the option to devise a combination of what works best for the individual: Honors or Advanced coursework, a Running Start class, a self-designed Flex Study, and/or to consider an Internship opportunity. (Students transferring in from other high schools may find that they need to complete a full year of standard coursework, and/or design special Flex Study options, in order to meet JCS’s more rigorous graduation requirements. )
While seniors may be learning off campus part-time, they remain full-time JCS students and are an integral and important part of the school community.
