Jefferson Community School was conceived in 2004 by a dedicated group of parents and educators who were looking to create a truly life-changing educational experience for students. Both teachers and parents shared a commitment to individualized education, experiential, expeditionary-based learning and a goal of igniting students’ intellectual passions.
Under the guidance of three talented and inspirational co-founders, JCS developed its unique educational environment and opened its doors in the fall of 2005. During the 2007-2008 school year, the JCS community celebrated the opening of its current campus in the historic Good Templar’s Hall in vibrant downtown Port Townsend. The building is owned by an LLC known as Friends of JCS, and the building houses both the growing school and professional offices in the basement.
The campus is ideally located for experiential education, surrounded by history and commerce, across the street from Memorial Field, and with many opportunities within walking distance.
Throughout its years of existence, JCS has welcomed numerous highly committed students, families, board members, inspirational teachers, and energetic school leaders to join in the community learning adventure and to help JCS develop and grow. Each brought their own unique talents and contributions to what JCS could become.
Jefferson Community School is now at a point in its development of moving beyond the founding years and is working diligently to build and maintain long-term sustainability.
