I welcome anyone who has landed on this website to take a careful look at this gem of a school.
As an educator with a wide range of experience in both public and independent school education, I was drawn to the opportunity to lead Jefferson Community School for a number of powerful reasons.
The core values and traditions of JCS are based on principles that shape this dynamic learning adventure for 7th-12th grade students:
- Engaged academics
- Individualized learning plans developed for each student
- Experiential and expeditionary learning
- Supportive school community
- Connected to the global community
- Personal growth and leadership
Jefferson Community School truly broadens learning opportunities beyond traditional classroom walls. Through curriculum that is integrated, experiential and at times expeditionary, our students embark on a rigorous and reverent learning journey to know themselves and discover their interconnections with the world. Our academic program promotes competency in the skills and attitudes that are increasingly necessary to live and thrive in the 21st century: commitment, critical thinking, creative problem solving, flexibility, and communication. Our staff and teachers guide our students to discover and develop their own strengths and passions through experiences, challenges, and encouragement, and the school supports their efforts with small class sizes and flexibility.
Our focus on community helps all of us learn to live and work together both within the school and as active members of our larger community. Our partnerships with local organizations enhance the exchange of ideas, bring real issues to life, and encourage our students to be participants in the greater Port Townsend community, and ultimately in the world at large.
Most schools reflect the personality and culture of the surrounding community, and JCS certainly does. East Jefferson County is known for being creative, flexible, intellectual, community-minded, and proudly unique.
Jefferson Community School is all that and then some!
I welcome you to not only peruse the website, but to stop into our school for a visit or give us a call, to learn more about the Jefferson Community School experience.
